Preparing for Fall Seeding

Category: Lawn Care | Posted by: White Oak Gardens

The optimal time to reseed your lawn in Cincinnati is around mid-September, when the ground retains warmth from the summer months and there’s typically an increase in rainfall.

However, successful seeding requires some advance preparation. It’s recommended to start the process a few weeks ahead of time.

When dealing with easier-to-kill weeds, a single application of herbicide, such as FertiLome Weed Free Zone, is usually sufficient. After applying the herbicide, it’s important to wait for at least 2 weeks before seeding. For tougher weeds like ground ivy and wild violets, two rounds of herbicide may be needed, making the second or third week of August an ideal time to begin treatment.

After the weeds have been eliminated, it’s essential to remove the dead vegetation by raking and aerating the soil. If additional soil is required, consider filling in with topsoil before seeding. Our recommended White Oak Fescue Mix is suitable for areas receiving full to partial sunlight. Alternatively, if your lawn has significant shade coverage, our White Oak Shade Mix is a great option to promote healthy growth.
