Carex is a huge genus of grass-like plants, commonly known as sedges. With thousands of species in this genus it can be hard to narrow down which work best for our area and for you. Here are a couple of our favorites!
bowles golden sedge
EXPOSURE: Full to Part Sun
SIZE: Height- 1′-2′ Width- 2′-3′
Bowles Golden Sedge is a semi-evergreen mounding perennial. Brilliant new yellow foliage in spring makes for a dramatic effect that carries throughout the year. Full sun creates the best color but this sedge can still help add a pop of color to somewhat shadier areas. For a neater appearance you can cut back foliage just before new growth emerges in spring.
ice dance japanese sedge
EXPOSURE: Part Shade to Part Sun
SIZE: Height- 1′, Slow Spreader
Another mounding semi-evergreen perennial, Ice Dance delivers bright green foliage with contrasting cream colored edges. This slow spreader works as a non-invasive ground-cover, with water gardening and in shadier areas. For a neater appearance, it is the same as with the Bowles Golden Sedge, cut back foliage just before new growth in spring.
