Why Fall is a Perfect Time for Planting Perennials

Category: Garden Resource, Planting | Posted by: Jeremy Newell

Fall is officially here and we couldn’t be more excited about it here at White Oak Gardens.

Not only do we love filling the greenhouse and grounds with gourds and pumpkins, but the fall beauty that nature has to offer cannot be beat.

It is important to take time out of our busy lives to enjoy the changing of the scenery from shades of green to different hues of yellow, red, orange, and even purple. Not only do we love the fall, but perennials do too.

Here are the reasons why.

Cooler weather makes it easier on the plants as well as ourselves.

I think we can all agree that dividing, planting, and digging up plants is much easier when the sun isn’t beating down on us! Plant leaves have much less stress without the summer heat, and their root systems don’t require such large quantities of water.

Having your perennial garden ready to go in the spring offers you more time to focus on your annual plantings.

Spring can be an extremely busy time for anyone and by planting in the fall you will be ready to go to work on your annual color!

This autumn has been a perfect fall planting season because of the extended warm season we are having.

This allows plant roots to get fully established. The plants don’t need to focus on blooming right now so they can send more energy to the roots, providing for healthier and more robust plants next year. A saying we enjoy using here at White Oak Gardens, “Fall is for planting!”
